Real Madrid’s French footballer Karim Benzema won the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. Benzema is the fifth French footballer overall to win the award, the last being won by Zinedine Zidane in 1998. Karim Benzema scored 44 goals in 46 matches of the season in 2021-22. Karim Benzema won the award for the first time in his career, Argentina’s Lionel Messi has won the award seven times while Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo has won the award five times. In women’s football, Barcelona’s Alexia Putellas won the Ballon d’Or for the second time in a row. Alexia scored eleven goals in ten matches for Barcelona last season.
