The Champions Club has been at the top of the points table since November last year and the award did not come to them suddenly but was already clear as they had been proving their superiority in the league for months.
On the other hand, the performance of Barcelona and Sevilla declined, as a result of which the chances of success for Real Madrid became brighter. Real Madrid will focus on the second leg of the Champions League semi-final after their victory in La Liga, which will be played on Wednesday 4 May at Manchester City’s home ground. Real Madrid lost 3-4 last week, but will now need to work harder to reach another European League final. Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti gave Karim Benzema and Venezuela Jr. a chance to rest for the first half of the match against Espanyol, and Rodrigo made the opportunity valuable by scoring two last-minute goals.
Rodrigo gave Madrid the lead in the 33rd minute of the match, scoring his second goal of the season to make room for compatriot Marcelo.
