Jevgenijs Aleksejevs Atacks the European Boxing Title
Jevegnijs Aleksejevs (14-0) is one of the most promising welterweights in Europe right now. In the sea of talents across the continent, his name currently stands out, and we are already noticing talks about his future and possible title shots.
Even though he still hasn’t received any offers for a big-time fight, Aleksejevs is on the radar, and the potential opponents are monitoring his development and his form. Hurricane, as the fans call him, has struck several sponsorship deals already, one of them with MightyTips, a prominent name in the betting world.
His popularity outside the native country was evident during the previous fight. The Hurricane’s Arrival at the Boxing Camp in Benidorm, Spain has created a lot of hype, with very good media coverage and several distinguished names from the boxing world coming to see Aleksejevs and watch his fight. We will talk about that later on, but before we have to make a short review of his career.
Kickboxing Title, Injury, and Boxing Rise
Aleksejevs was one of the most talented kickboxers in the world. In 2007, he had a fantastic appearance at the World Championship in Italy, taking the title, and one year later, at the age of 15, he was the European champion, cementing his position as one of the most talented kickboxers on the globe.
As time went by, Aleksejevs was further improving, but his career in this sport was abruptly stopped in 2015 when he broke his leg at the KOC World Championship Fight Show. At that point, it seemed that Latvia’s biggest combat sports talent would be wasted, yet that didn’t happen because of Aleksejev’s will. He decided to switch to boxing, and with the help of the famous Mairis Breidis, a former cruiserweight champion of the world, he became a top-class boxer.
Biggest victories
Aleksejevs takes pride in three wins in his career so far, and those were against:
- Mareks Kovalevskis
- Deniss Kormilin
- Siarhei Khamitski
The first was his debut when he delivered a strong KO in the first round. Kovalevskis isn’t a prominent boxing name, but on the other side, the way Aleksejevs debuted was impressive and one of the reasons why he got a Hurricane nickname.
The second significant triumph was over Deniss Kormilin. It was another vicious KO, but only against a much higher-ranked rival. In this event, Aleksejevs proved he had enough power to take out much experienced competitors, as Kormilin fought numerous top names in the division. At the time, nobody expected to see Aleksejevs defeating the rival this easily, which suggested that he might be ready for more formidable challenges.
And finally, his victory over Khamitski was the ultimate proof of the Hurricane’s talent. The Belarusian was the former interim middleweight title contender and was a ranked guy. Aleksejevs was better following a split decision, pushing himself to the limit and testing his physical and mental strength. It was after this fight that everyone was certain that the Hurricane had enough talent to rise up through the ranks and become a champion.
Going Abroad
After excellent results at home, it was time for Aleksejevs to jump over the border and debut on foreign soil. His promotion had scheduled him a match against the French hope, Dimitri Trenel, at Hotel Holiday World at Benalmadena in Spain.
The Hurrican swept his rival, not leaving him the slightest chance to be competitive and stay on his feet until the end of the fight. It was a third-round KO and a message to the division about Aleksejevs’ intention and power.
We saw him imposing a relentless tempo right from the start, cracking Trenel’s defense and smashing his body with hard hooks. With the time passing, Latvian increased the pace before eventually knocking the Frenchman. Hard hits sent Trenel to the ground, and the judge in the ring had to stop the fight because the 25-year-old couldn’t continue.
Title Talks
Even though he still isn’t among the contenders, Aleksejevs’ status guarantees him a big fight anytime soon. His plans are pretty straightforward. At first, he wants to beat one high-ranked rival before entering the top echelon of contenders. After that, he wants one or two more fights before getting an opportunity to fight for the belt.
The primary target is the EBU title in either the welterweight or the super-welterweight division. The current super-welterweight champ is Milan Prat, who must defend the title against the mandatory challenger, James Metcalf. Meanwhile, the Jon Migues vs. Jordy Weiss match winner would take the welterweight belt.
Nobody should be surprised if in a year or two Aleksejevs battles one of the above-mentioned names. His progress is visible after each fight, and if he continues to evolve at this pace, the welterweight division will soon get another big dog on the block.
